Thanks Tammy! I appreciate all your advice. I'm gonna give this method a try to use especially for bad weather days. I have purchased the "Potty Patch" to try. I was a little concern that Zoey would eat the litter too or make a mess. I'm hoping the potty patch (looks like grass) will be better. I had no idea you could train a small dog this way until recently. I wish I would have know of this method for my first yorkie. I know it will take time and patience, but I think it will be well worth it. I'm glad Nittany took to this way of training. So I'm hopeful that when I get Zoey from Karen in a couple of months she will adjust to it too. Thanks again Tammy and Merry Christmas! Cindy

Hi Cindy! First, I have to say that I love the maltese I got from Karen in March. He is such a joy to have around the house...
and gives so much love! Originally I purchased the dog litter and litter box, but found that he wanted to chew the litter.
So, I decided quickly to change to pads and the pad holder...which I ordred from PetSmart or Petco (can't remember). I recommend
the holder b/c it keeps the pad in a specific place and doesn't give the puppy a chance to chew or take with him/her. Anyway, I kept
Nittany in a small area...we have a foyer in the front of the house that I blocked off with his kennel, littler pads, bed, food and water.
What worked for me was that I would sit with him for a little and everytime he looked like he was ready to go I would grab him and
place him on the pad. Because of the small area, it was easy to make the grab and placement of the puppy on the pad. After a while,
I would let him play and try to pursuade him to go to the bathroom by telling him and even putting him on before he actually started.
It only took a few days, but he started to get the hint and I'd say 50% of the time would hop on the pad himself. After about a week or
so, I opened up the are to the living room for a time period. Would get him to use the pad before heading to the bigger space and
would take him back after about an hour. Eventually, he made his way to the pad himself. The first 4-5 months, I'd say the pad was
used about 75-85 percent of the time...accidents would have happen every now and then....mostly occuring when I was in a different
part of the house and he didn't want to go to the pad himself. But, the last three months...he hasn't had one accident and goes to
the pad himself...even when I am in a different part of the house. I do notice that he likes a clean area...so I've started purchasing
the economy pads which cost about $45 for 300..or the larger pads where I fold over the area used...so we get more uses out of
each pad. I k now I wrote a bunch of stuff, so feel free to contact me with any questions. The best advice is to keep a schedule,
persuade him to use it as much as possible and be patient. I found that when he made a mess, I would immediately take him to
the pad and hold him there for a minute, while talking to him. Also, I found a slightly larger pad holder works better.....he likes to
walk in circles, the smaller didn't give enough room to do so. Truly this was the greatest invention! It may be little extra effort, but so
worth it! --Tammy

Hi Tammy, was hoping for a little help in litter training a puppy. I will be getting a yorkie puppy from Karen in February and very much want to litter train her. I've been doing lots of
reading on the subject, but was wondering if you have any tips for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
